‹L'écriture cholo› constitue une des plus anciennes formes de graffiti au 20e siècle, ayant apparue à Los Angeles dès les années 1940, bien avant les tags et les pièces à New York au début des annés 1970. Elle a eu une influence majeure sur l'expression visuelle des différentes cultures populaires en Californie, aussi bien sur les mouvement lowrider, surf, skate et hip-hop. L'écriture cholo est un phénomène mexicano-américain basé sur la typographie gothique. Ces inscriptions sont des signes territoriaux, créés pour définir visuellement l'aire d'influence d'un gang. Une authentique calligraphie urbaine ayant des codes stricts, un alphabet conçu par les gangs latinos pour l'écriture urbaine. Pour la première fois l'évolution et l'esthétique de l'écriture cholo est documentée et le rôle des typographies gothiques est analysé dans l'apparition de ce phénomène. ‹Cholo Writing: Latino Gang Graffiti in Los Angeles› présente deux collections de photographies: une par le californien Howard Gribble qui a photographié le graffiti de gangs latinos à travers une vaste aire géographique dans le comté de Los Angeles pendant les années 1970, et l'autre par le designer graphique et auteur François Chastanet qui a voyagé dans les mêmes quartiers plus de trente ans après pour documenter les inscriptions actuelles.

‹Cholo writing› is the 20th century’s oldest form of graffiti, evident in Los Angeles since the 1940s long before the appearance of tags and pieces in the early 1970s New York. It has had a major influence on the visual expressions of Californian popular culture, including the lowrider, surf, skate and hip-hop movements. Cholo writing is a Mexican-American phenomenom based on blackletter typography. The inscriptions are territorial signs, created to define visually a gang’s turf. A genuine urban calligraphy with strict codes, it was developed by Latino gangs for street writing. Here, for the first time, the evolution and aesthetic of Cholo writing is documented and the influence of gothic typefaces is traced. ‹Cholo Writing: Latino Gang Graffiti in Los Angeles› presents two collections of photographs: one by Californian Howard Gribble, who photographed Latino gang graffiti over a wide geographic area in the 1970s, and one by French graphic designer and writer François Chastanet, who travelled to the same neighborhoods more than thirty years later to document today’s inscriptions.
